South Branch Oromocto (Hoyt)

This river, for all we know is a very short and sweet run. This has only been run a couple of times, as it is kind of out of the way and only done because other things were not running. It is halfway between SJ and F’ton, so we did it one day on our way home in December, 2004.

We bushwacked our way up above the obvious falls to see if we could find some more drops. We did indeed find some rapids and ledges but nothing to serious. These ledges were all within 500 metres above the main drop. Probably 3 ledges in all?

The main drop has most of the water running on the river left of the drop. I have talked to people about this falls and they say that people jump off this falls and swim but they sure wouldn’t do it on the left side as the majority of the water lands on a shelf about a foot under water level. Therefore the move here is to come out of the eddy on the left side, ferrying across the main flow, trying to get to the right side of the main flow. When you hit the lip, you want to be angled right and be confident you can boof. I had a sideways boof and went with the water. I just touched rocks when I landed but when I rolled after that I dragged across rocks so I’m confident it is shallow here.

Close up of left side – you want to come with a right angle and good boof to slightly left of center of this photo

Continue on about 100 metres and you see a path on the right which heads up over the hill and out the dirt road to your car.

Mr. Burley and I first ran this in December, 2004
