Front Surfing

Front Surfing is the most basic wave move. It involves carving back and fourth across a wave spending as much time as possible on it’s face. The key to front surfing is using the power of your torso.

Step One: First you need to get on the wave. Aim to cross the eddy line with some upstream angle and your bow in the troth of the wave. Approach the eddy line with some speed, as you reach it take one last power stroke on the downstream side to pull you boat, and body, across the eddy line and onto the wave. This power stroke should be planted at your toes as vertically as possible and pulled through to your hip.

Step Two: Once on the wave start controlling your surf with a rudder. Edge you boat downstream and plant your rudder deeply on the upstream side to hold your boats angle. The key to holding this angle is turning your whole upper body to face your rudder. By using your torso muscles you’ll have much more power at you disposal and more control over your boats actions.

Step Three: When you reach the shoulder of the wave it’s time to cut back. Aggressively push off your rudder and flatten your boat’s tilt until your pointing directly upstream. Once you reach this stage edge your boat in the other direction and plant a rudder on the opposite side. This should send you to the other shoulder where you’ll be ready to repeat this step all over again.
