North American Tour #9- Vera Cruz, Land of Sickness

After a “quick” one day drive we arrived at Casa Esprit, Mexican base camp for the Canadian Rafting company Esprit. The folks there were nice enough to let us stay in their loft and gave us free reign on their facilities…all three of us rushed to the showers.

The camp is in a central location to all the rivers in the area with the furthest one being a few hours away. We spent the next week paddling as many rivers as we could and loving not having to take the tents down every morning or even set them up in the first place. There’s some great rivers in the area, a few good play runs, one multi day trip, and a sweet creek. The closest river is the Pascatos, this is the play run, a great class three river with a nice cartwheel hole and a super fun standing wave. The only problem with this river is when it rains everything bad in the area flows into it and if you get some water up your nose or in your ears your going to get sick. Sooooo…we all got sick! It’s the same thing that you get from drinking bad water. We’d been drinking bottled water the whole trip trying really hard to avoid being sick but even after all our prevention it crept into our system another way. After a few unpleasant days of running to the bath room all night and being afraid to boof because…well…boof…hhhuuummm…I’ll let you draw your own conclusions…none of us had depends.

Anyway I missed what I guess was a great day on the Tomatas. The Tomatas is a short section of river with tons of drops one after the other. Stories of long sub-outs from Ben and the huge smile on Zac’s face as he returned to the car quickly made me jealous and a little frustrated at the timing of my sickness. With that being the last river of the trip were packing it up and heading to Campache to meet up with Ben’s girl friend and go our separate ways.

I don’t have a ticket booked yet and things look a little sketchy right now so stay tuned to see how it goes.
